GALVANIC CELL

  • a galvanic cell is used to generate electricity through chemical reactions. daniel cell is the example of the galvanic cell.
  • the cell which is used for the electrolysis process is called a galvanic cell.
  • voltaic, electrochemical cell, etc,. these are other names of a galvanic cell.

coming to the construction of a galvanic cell;

the galvanic cell consists of two subcells,

one with the zinc electrode in ZnSo4, another is with the cOpper electrode in CuSo4.

both the cells are connected with a salt bridge, the salt bridge consists of agar agar gel saturated with the KCl or kNO3 or NH4NO3.

the purpose of the salt bridge is to prevent the accumulation of charge around the electrodes and also maintains the neutrality of the solution.
it allows the current by completing the circuit.

the zinc electrode is the anode(-) and the copper electrode is the cathode(+).
the oxidation reaction is taking place at the anode which causes the zinc electrons to move to the copper electrode. these electrons moved through the electric wire connected with both electrodes.the reduction reaction takes place at the copper electrode.

the reaction in terms of chemical formulas:

both the reactions are combined and as we called as like redox reaction.

note:

oxidation is the process of losing the electrons according to the chemistry dictionary.
the reduction in the process of accepting the electrons according to the chemistry dictionary.
the large potential difference occurs at the anodic metal.
